This Wednesday night will see Manchester United host Southampton at the Theatre of Dreams and the home side’s aim will be not to replicate the type of performance that they delivered when these two teams last met back in September.
The Red Devils nicked that game at St. Mary’s 3-2 but needed a very late brace from star striker Robin van Persie to do so. Up until that point, they were lost for ideas and certainly looked a very incoherent unit.
Another and more important reason for them to put a better show will be that their title rivals Manchester City have an easy game against QPR tonight and if they manage to win it, then United’s lead at the top will be cut down to just two points. Hence, they must do what needs to be done to make sure that there is enough gap between them at the top of the PL table.
Sir Alex Ferguson rested the key quartet of Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand, Robin van Persie and Shinji Kagawa in the recent FA Cup fourth round win over Fulham but they are all likely to be reinstated back into the squad against the Saints. However, Jonny Evans and Ashley Young are still not a 100 percent match fit and are not expected to play in this fixture.
No major changes are expected in Southampton’s line-up and despite the arrival of new signing Vegard Foren, coach Mauricio Pochettino could name the same eleven that started in the 0-0 draw against Everton on last matchday.
The PL leaders have won each and every of the last nine meetings between these two sides and in order to find a Southampton win in this fixture, one would have to go all the way back to 2003. With the kind of rich goal scoring form, United’s strikers are showing these days, any result other than a comfortable home win seems impossible.
The play here is to back Manchester United -2 goals with Pinnacle Sports at odds of 2.15.
