Reading FC sacked their manager Brian McDermott in the midweek in hope of replicating the change in fortunes a la Southampton.
Like McDermott, the Saints’ former boss Nigel Adkins was a very famous figure among the club’s fans but their chairman decided to replace him with Mauricio Pochettino. That bold decision paid off quite nicely as the Saints now sit four points and two places above the relegation zone. While that replacement of managers worked for Southampton, it is not necessary that this process will cause the same effect on the Royals.
Irrespective of the fact that the Saints have much deeper pockets than Reading, the important thing was that they had a replacement lined-up even before they had sacked Adkins. In Reading’s case, it is being said that the Royals’ board have yet to even begin the search for a new guy.
Moreover, their opponents this weekend are the might Manchester United at Old Trafford, and the teeny tiny chance they had of getting something out of this tie is now gone. They have won each of their five last games in all competition and this weekend would likely see that streak touch the half a dozen mark.
From another perspective, things haven’t gone well for Manchester United in their last two games and so they will also be determined to get back to winning ways. Hence, any other result than a heavy thrashing for Reading will be a surprise. The play for this fixture is to back Manchester United -2 goals with PaddyPower at a return of 1.67.
