This Sunday, one of the most historic and fierce rivalries of English football will get rekindled when Liverpool host Manchester United at Anfield.
The Merseysiders’ plight of the past few years has lessened the importance of this particular fixture, otherwise their feud used to be arguably the greatest in the country.
At the moment though, it’s the Liverpudlians who are looking down at United in the league standings. They have won both their opening two fixtures albeit slim margins of 1-0. They also needed extra time at home to dump the lowly Notts County out of the League Cup earlier this week. Nonetheless, their start to the season has been quite positive.
United have looked good in their three games so far this season too. They easily lifted the Community Shield at Wigan’s expense before hammering Swansea City 4-1 in Wales. In Monday night’s home game against Chelsea, they were again the more dominant side of the two, but Jose Mourinho’s defensive tactics didn’t allow them to win that game.
Still, they dropped two points in that fixture, which means that they sit two places below Liverpool in the standings.
United have won all of the last three games against Liverpool with the scoreline being 2-1 in all of them. It is clear that all those encounters were close, but United’s greater quality powered them through.
Despite not making any major acquisitions this summer, David Moyes’ squad is far better than Liverpool’s. Moreover, it seems that the visitors’ enigmatic star Wayne Rooney might be staying after all. He was quite clearly the best player on the pitch in the Chelsea game, and if his head his really back in the game, the result of this upcoming game will be only one, and it won’t be favourable for Liverpool.
